Often, the most effective way of supporting community is by engaging our most powerful asset - our own employees. Some of our activities are listed below.
SOS Children's Village Bambous: Setting up of Library
In July 2007, our Corporate Sustainability committee opened the SOS Children's Villages Bambous' library in the presence of the Honourable Minister Indranee Seebun, Minister of Women's Rights, Child Development, Family Welfare and Consumer Protection as well as Mr Sandeep Uppal (CEO HSBC Mauritius), Mr Rene Sanson (Chairman of SOS Mauritius) and Mr Amedee Dabeecharun(National Director of SOS Mauritius).
The success of this library project was the direct result of great teamwork. The library was truly a small haven where the children were able to discover the pleasures of reading and reap the benefits it has on the learning process. Every single HSBC staff member was proud of their contribution and knew in their hearts that this is what Corporate Sustainability is all about " MAKING A DIFFERENCE".
HSBC has been a partner of SOS Children's Villages since 2003 and we support many types of programmes and activities such as:
- Remedial teaching
- The setting up of a library - inaugurated in 2007 by the Minister of Women's Rights, Child Development, Indranee Seebun.
- 'Future First' is an outreach programme to empower children with education and life skills and combat child poverty. The programme supports projects for these vulnerable orphaned and abandoned children and their communities by providing education, counselling and shelter to these children who, while improving the quality of their lives, become productive members of society and contribute to building a sustainable and robust local economy.
Foyer Namaste: Together We Care!
Foyer Namaste is an NGO which takes care, on residential basis, of severely handicapped individuals, mostly abandoned ones. Residents are between the age range of 2 to 60 years old. HSBC donated some useful items: fridge, ficrowave, blender, washing machine, water filter.
Toy Drive Project
Toy Drive started as a small effort of a member of staff of HSBC Insurance Brokers Limited UK to make a meaningful contribution to street children and orphans in the Philippines.
On a yearly basis, volunteers from HSBC donate toys and go to different NGOs to bring children Christmas and New Year flavours. Dancing and magical shows are organised and Santa Claus is always invited to join the party!
Ready, Steady, Cook...
HSBC's chef's squad gathered this August 2008, equipped with their aprons, knives, forks and utensils and headed to SOS Children's Village Bambous for a whole day of cooking! The idea was to relieve SOS mothers of their house chores for one day.
Celebrating Mother's Day
For Mother's Day 2008, HSBC volunteers spend a day in Couvent de Belle Rose, doing all possible to make this celebration unforgettable for ladies.
