Banking on Survival Awareness Campaign

BACKGROUND

The 2009 UN theme for WED 2010 is 'Biodiversity- Ecosystems Management and the Green Economy'. In addition, 2010 is the UN's 'International Year of Biodiversity'. Many local species are on the IUCN Red List and deserve to be considered. 3 NGOs are working hard for the conservation of these animals & plants which are our Mauritian heritage.

OVERVIEW

As part of World Environment Day, learn about local / endemic species under threat - find out how your actions determine the survival of different species.

OBJECTIVES

FIND OUT HOW YOUR ACTIONS CAN HELP THIS SPECIES SURVIVE

To educate our fellow Mauritians on the importance of learning about and protecting our local habitats for the future survival of many species. Develop pride around our endemic treasures. Our ambition is that this national campaign creates as much awareness as possible on the work done by NGOs for conservation and focus on the threats experienced by the dolphin, Green turtle and Hawksbill turtle, Trochetia, Fody, Gunther's gecko and the Spinner Dolphin. The programme will consist of various messages and education through the media that will hopefully lead people of all ages to learn more about our endemic/indigenous threatened species or whose livelihood is threatened by human behaviour and change this behaviour.

DURATION

16 to end of June 2010.

PARTNERS

This campaign is possible thanks to the support of partners who worked for free believing in the impact it will have on every Mauritian: Cread, AdvantEdge, BlueFish eMarketing, L'Express (La Sentinelle) and Colourscheme, FlowerAd and SeriPlus who worked at cost for the printing and sticking of billboards.

Two of the three NGOs represented in this campaign are HSBC Community Investment beneficiaries: The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) & The Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS) for which a total budget of MUR 2 millions has been allocated in 2010 towards environment education and conservation.
